Which is Better – Mini Sites or Authority Sites?

Many online marketers firmly believe that mini sites are the way to go, but there might be evidence that authority sites could hold the key to even greater success. Yet the way Google views these sites and their differences has now come into debate by itself. Yet recently the attention mini sites have received from Google seems to be nearing an end. In the last few algorithm changes, though, the larger content rich sites seemed to have gained favor over the mini sites. This is Google’s way of working towards offering their users better search results. Despite this, a mini site still has its place in your marketing efforts.

Sometimes people want to really refine their focus into a tight, well defined niche. There is no shame in this at all. Sometimes you’re only interested in that very thin slice of the market known as a micro-niche. For this small market segment, authority sites simply do not perform as well as mini sites. Mini sites are excellent for taking one or two very focused keywords and dominating the search engine results for those keywords. Assuming of course that the competition for these two keywords isn’t too fierce. In all honesty, you can also target micro-niches inside authority sites too. But if you have no interest to do so, then the mini site is the best choice.

It is somewhat obvious that an authority site will demand much more work, time, and commitment than the smaller mini site. People have different preferences in this area, and one is not better than the other. The mini site model has a lot to offer people who get bored with the same thing every day and prefer frequent changes. It doesn’t take long to create a mini site, and if you’re good at it you could soon have hundreds of them. Building an authority site, however, can be a long process. But in some respects it can be thought of as a collection of mini sites.

When you have an authority site, you’ll want to frequently add fresh content, whereas with mini sites you may just want to keep making new ones.

Far more doors will be open with a highly ranked authority site than any minisite will ever have. You will see a lot of high ranking authority sites selling space for third party ads. Much of your success with that model depends on different things. If you can rank highly in a competitive market with a lot of traffic, then you can do well with selling banner space. On the other hand, selling ad space is not the only way to make money. For instance, if you would rather create an authority site about say, hostgator coupon 2010, it would have a better stick rate.

When making your choice between an authority site or a mini site, you have to consider many different factors. Many online marketers revolve their business practices around Google, of course. Of course we also understand that line of thinking, but we would suggest that you diversify your marketing and avoid living your business life according to Google’s terms. You may want to experiment with both types of sites and see which brings you better results.
